Neptune is one of the roses I bought in May 2008. It's a new variety. It was at the top of my purchasing list because it is 1) purple and 2) has an exceptionally strong and heady fragrance. I love to stick my nose in these flowers. There was only one plant available among several nurseries, so I took it even though it didn't look the very healthiest. But it proved me wrong. It settled, grew steadily to become a very sturdy plant, and then produced a round of its lovely and fragrant flowers. I love the foliage, too. Big glossy dark green leaves.
In its second year, Neptune is proving a little frustrating. The flowers are gorgeous and smell wonderful, but the bush itself is rangy and kind of ugly. And it's TALL. The flowers are opening up almost at the eaves of the house, and the bush doesn't respond to pruning as well as Catalina.
